Starlings flocking over Brighton's West Pier.

This was something I'd heard about, and indeed seen photos of, but on this particular evening I wasn't expecting it at all. A few small groups of starlings appeared and before long an enormous flock had gathered, swooping above and around the old west pier. The cloud meant that it was getting dark already, and getting a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the fast-moving birds proved challenging. This shot was the best of the bunch, simply because of the shape the flock formed above the pier. Capturing it at this moment was blind luck, I assure you The flock is much bigger than shown by this photo, because the main body of it was almost directly above me. What you see is merely the tail end of the flock.

Another day, with better weather and better preparation, I will improve on this shot and do the spectacle justice...
